The failure is always the same

One of you adds things during the week. The other passes the shop on the way home, buys milk, and gets back to find the list had four items on it. Nobody did anything wrong — the list was in a pocket, behind a lock screen, and nothing reminded anyone it was there.

What changes

Pin the shops you actually use. When either of you arrives at one with items still unchecked, your phone says so — even if the app is closed. Whoever is at home sees that you are there and can add the thing they forgot; it appears on your phone before you reach the till.

Everything both of you tick disappears from the other’s list immediately, so there is no “did you already get bread”.
